The successful applicant must be able to execute the requirements listed on the custodial job description and take pride in their work. Maintenance skills are a plus. The successful applicant must pass the required background check.

TITLE: Custodian
QUALIFICATIONS: District maintenance personnel shall have a minimum of two years experience in maintenance operation in a school system or company. He/she shall demonstrate a general knowledge of all phases of maintenance services. This individual must minimally possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
JOB GOAL: To provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to learn, play, and develop. The custodian will not only be working with maintenance, cleaning, and care, but he/she will be working with people, especially children.
GENERAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBLITIES:
Routine Daily or As Needed Cleaning Duties:
- Restrooms:
- empty wastebaskets
- mop and disinfect floors
- clean and disinfect sinks
- clean and disinfect mirrors
- clean and disinfect toilet bowls, seats, urinals, and pipes
- empty sanitary receptacles
- check hand soap, paper towels & toilet tissues
- check that toilets, urinals, faucets and drains are working
- clean doors and partitions
- check deodorizers
- spot clean walls
- replace lights
- clean baseboards
- clean radiators
- clean light fixtures
- clean exterior of all dispensers (tissue, soap, etc.)
Classrooms
- vacuum all carpeted areas
- sweep all tiled floors with dust mop
- empty wastebaskets
- clean sinks and faucets
- clean window glass on doors
- dust ledges and other surfaces
- clean shades or blinds
- Hallways, entryways, boiler room and utility rooms
- sweep all halls and entryways with a dust mop
- vacuum entryway carpets
- clean and disinfect drinking fountains
- spot clean walls and baseboards
- dust all ledges, tops of lockers
- clean door glass and steel plates on doors and entryways
- replace light bulbs
- clean light fixtures
- sweep stairs and floors of boiler room and utility rooms
- arrange and maintain boiler room in a safe and orderly manner
- clean stairs and ramp
- wet mop hallways
- Gym
- set up, clean, and put away tables after breakfast and lunch
- remove trash during and after breakfast and lunch
- sweep entire gym floor
- machine mop floor as needed
- clean glass on gym doors
- spot clean walls of gym
- Offices
- sweep office floors and vacuum carpets
- empty wastebaskets
- dust ledges and other surfaces
- keep paper stocked at all copy machines
- Miscellaneous
- dust ceiling fans quarterly
- use air compressor and vacuum to keep projectors free of dirt and dust on a scheduled basis
- signs of vandalism or abuse of facilities should be reported to the principal
- minor repairs should be done as needed or upon request
- make sure the school is adequately heated and cooled for the day
- monitor the heating system through a website
- receive shipments of supplies that may include commodities, food, and paper and move to appropriate locations
- move furniture or equipment within building and grounds as required for various activities and as directed by the principal
- assumes responsibilities for opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving that all doors and windows are secured and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons are turned off
- Lawn and Grounds Duties
- Mowing
- weekly or as needed mowing of the school grounds during the season
- weed eating as needed during the season
- Spraying and Lawn Care as needed
- Tree Trimming as needed
- Playground maintenance as needed and including mulch and drainage
- Field maintenance when required at elementary field
- Show and ice removal
- all sidewalks should be free of snow and ice this may require removal 1 or more times daily
- salt will be used as needed to maintain entryways and walkways if icy throughout the school day
- Inventory of necessary cleaning supplies, equipment, tools, etc.
- maintain an inventory of supplies
- order supplies as needed in a timely manner so that duties are not delayed
- complies with local and state laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash, waste, etc.
- stay current on green methods and requirements in regard to cleaning supplies and methods
- Conduct monthly inspections and tests of all required systems to ensure safe conditions
- All other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor
Summer Cleaning and Maintenance
- Floor Maintenance
- old carpet and/or tile removal if new flooring is being placed
- all tiled floors are to be stripped, sealed and waxed
- all carpeted floors are to be bonneted or shampooed as needed
- Window & Door Care
- all glass (both sides) is thoroughly cleaned yearly
- window ledges and sills should be sanded and painted if needed
- doors should be sanded and varnished or painted if needed
- Walls and Shelving
- all walled surfaces and shelving should be spot cleaned throughout the school year
- walled surfaces and shelving will be painted in classrooms, halls, gym as needed
- Lockers
- all lockers will be cleaned and disinfected during the summer months
- lockers will be repaired as needed
- Classrooms
- thoroughly clean whiteboards, remove tape and other substances from all surfaces
- all desks and chairs should be thoroughly cleaned yearly
- disinfectants provided to classrooms to clean desktops and other surfaces as needed
- blinds or shades cleaned thoroughly yearly
- walls, baseboards and bookshelves cleaned, repaired, and painted as needed
Miscellaneous Summer Duties: The custodians will use the summer months to thoroughly clean the school and complete maintenance projects that may not be mentioned above. Prior to summer vacation, the custodian and principal will work out a summer maintenance and cleaning schedule.
Schedule: The majority of cleaning will be completed during conference times and in the PM hours. A schedule will be determined based on the school’s master schedule for each grade level. Bathrooms will be cleaned at a minimum one time daily. Sanitizing water fountains will take place several times during the school day.
Safety Sensitive
Due to the serious risk of harm that can result form performing said job duties while impaired by drugs or alcohol will be subject to drug testing in accordance with published Board Policies and Regulations.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve months per year, salary and work year to be established by the Board of Education.
